Post Shin splints anyone?
Anyone have any suggestions for shin splints? I kind of overdid the walking the other day (but it was only a mile...) Image and now I'm paying for it. :yow I even have a bruise on one of my shins where the tendons attach - ouch. I tried some ice, but it didn't help that much and it sure is hard just walking around...I certainly won't be dancing any time soon. Image

I have many foot issues which are the cause of this and even though I wore a good pair of shoes & orthotics, I still get these from walking. I wish I had a few spare feet like this guy... Image

I had them as a teen and know how painful they are, you have my sympathy. :hug

My daughter is a cheerleader and one of the girls on her squad has shin splints pretty bad and she wraps her calf/shin snugly with medical tape. It apparently helps since she continues to cheer. I don't know how tight she does it or how long she wears them, but I've seen her have to wrap them during a game because it starts hurting so it must work. :shrug

Hi Linda,

Attached is the link for band resistance and great stretching for the shin splints.

I hope this helps.

When I did roller derby I used to get them all the time... they're awful, aren't they?
What usually helped me was using stairs to stretch... with your toes on the step and your heels hanging off the back kind of drop your heels down so they're lower than your toes to stretch. Then stretch the other way by going up on your toes.
That was way harder to explain than I thought, but you get the idea (I hope) Just hang on to the railing for support and obviously, use the bottom step!

Thanks for your replies everyone. I can now walk without dreading every step... Yes they sure are awful- unfortunately I get them fairly frequently, though not usually accompanied by a bruise. Image

When you first wrote this I was trying to remember the stretch that the PT would use for patients......what Rixie wrote is one of them.......the other is to take a rolled up towel and sit with legs straight out in front of you (in bed).....then gently pull the towel toward you. That is like the baby step to the one on the stairs.....I think ice is the answer too.

I had them years ago from running in bad shoes. They have never really gone away. And they are painful!!!! Glad to hear they are better.
